Step 1: Scheduling a YAPI Plugin Update (for Major PMS Updates)
If you're getting a major update to Dentrix, Open Dental, or Eaglesoft, you'll also need an update to your YAPI plugin to make sure that YAPI and your practice management software continue to work together smoothly. For minor updates, you can skip this step and go directly to Temporarily Stopping Your YAPI Service below.

We recommend you schedule this appointment in advance but make sure it falls after your practice management software has been updated. When scheduling, in the Anything else our team should know? section, please include the name of your practice's PMS (Dentrix, Open Dental, or Eaglesoft) and the new and old version numbers if you have them:
Not sure how to tell if you're doing a major update? Major updates are indicated by a change in version number after the first decimal point. For example, if you're upgrading from Dentrix 17.3 to 17.5, you need a plugin update from YAPI. Minor updates (that often push to you automatically) show in the numbers after that and you don't need a plugin update for those. So, for example, if you update from Dentrix 17.5.154.0 to 17.5.163.0, you don't need a plugin update from YAPI.
Step 2: Temporarily Stopping Your YAPI Service
While you're updating your practice management software, it's best for your YAPI service to be completely off. To stop your YAPI Service while you complete your update:
-
On your practice's server, locate the desktop YAPI Service Manager icon and double-click it:
Tip: If you're not sure where to find the server in your office, see our article Identifying Your Practice's Server.
-
Once the YAPI Service Manager opens, click Stop Service.
Step 3: Restarting Your YAPI Service After the Update
Once you've completed updates to your practice management software, you can turn your YAPI Service back on:
-
On your practice's server, locate the desktop YAPI Service Manager icon again and double-click it:
-
Once the YAPI Service Manager opens, click Start Service and wait 3 minutes.
-
Double-click the YAPI icon on the desktop to open the YAPI Dashboard.
-
If the YAPI Dashboard boots up with no issues: Your YAPI Service has successfully restarted.
-
If you receive an error message: Wait 2 more minutes and repeat this step. If YAPI still doesn't start or you have any issues with YAPI, contact our Customer Support team.
-
Step 4: Next Steps
A member of our Technical Support team will call you for your appointment at your scheduled date and time. During that appointment, make sure you can provide the technician access to your server.
Simply make sure YAPI opens on a workstation. On the server or on any workstation, double-click the YAPI icon on the desktop to open the YAPI Dashboard.
-
If the YAPI Dashboard boots up with no issues: Your YAPI Service has successfully restarted.

If you receive an error message: Wait 2 more minutes and repeat this step. If YAPI still doesn't start or you have any issues with YAPI, contact our Customer Support team.
